BOTOX

Many are turning to Botox® to reduce moderate to severe frown lines between their brows, forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet.

This safe and effective medication is placed into your wrinkles using a tiny needle. It is used to eliminate facial wrinkles and frown lines by decreasing the movement of the muscles in these trouble areas. Botox® can brighten up your attitude and outlook, remove the wrinkles of time or make small improvements in an otherwise perfect face. Botox® has also been used successfully for patients with excessive sweating in the armpits, hands or feet.

Botox® is specially formulated with a purified protein, which relaxes the muscles when injected in the targeted area, ultimately reducing the appearance of frown lines and facial wrinkles. It is a minimally invasive procedure, allowing patients to return to normal daily activities immediately following the procedure. A topical anesthesia can be used, if necessary.

FDA approved, Botox® is a safe and effective procedure that provides patients with results that can last anywhere from 3-5 months on average.

Following the Botox® procedure it is not uncommon to experience some minor swelling, redness or bruising around the targeted site. Patients can take Tylenol and/or use ice packs to help reduce swelling and relieve any discomfort. Other side effects include drooping of the eyelid, nausea, headache and respiratory infection, but only occur in about 1% of patients. Side effects are rare, but include: temporary drooping of the eyelid, nausea, headache and respiratory infection. They are considered temporary and usually resolve themselves within a few weeks.

FILLERS

Smoothing out folds and wrinkles can make an enormous difference in a person’s appearance and sometimes even make them look several years younger.

Dermal fillers are used to help reverse the signs of aging and provide patients with a more natural, youthful appearance compared to surgical face lifts. Dermal fillers are used to:

  • Reduce or eliminate wrinkles
  • Reduce the appearance of scars
  • Enhance lips
  • Enhance the contours of the face

There are a few types of dermal fillers available today, including:

  • Hyaluronic acid based fillers (i.e. JUVEDERM®, VOLUMA®)
  • Calcium hydroxyl apatite fillers (i.e. Radiesse®)

Your dermatologist will work with you individually to determine the best filler for your individual circumstances. Usually, a topical ointment will be used to numb the targeted area. Then, using a small needle, the dermal filler will carefully be injected into each wrinkle or scar being treated. Patients can expect some temporary, mild burning or stinging as the filler is being injected.

Side effects are uncommon, but can include: allergic reactions, bacterial infection and bruising around the treated area, just to name a few. Results vary depending on the type of filler, but normally can last anywhere from three months to five years.

CHEMICAL PEELS

There are various types of chemical facial peels that can aid in skin rejuvenation. We have licensed staff members who give facials and perform superficial peels (“weekend peels”).

Superficial peels generally last 15-20 minutes after the chemical peeling agent (70% glycolic acid) is placed. The agent helps to resurface the upper layers of the skin to restore a more youthful, healthy look.

We also perform medium depth peels (25% trichloracetic acid peel). A medium depth peel requires more healing days; however, it will also yield better results than with a superficial peel. Breaking through the deeper skin layers, medium depth peels are a popular option for skin rejuvenation. Our doctor can determine which chemical facial peel may be right for you.

TCA SKIN PEELS

Chemical facial peels can aid in skin rejuvenation. Our staff performs TCA skin peels (trichloracetic acid peel) at different concentrations at our office.

The peel can improve your skin’s appearance and diminish wrinkles, improve acne scarring and correct pigmentation problems. Trichloracetic acid is generally used in medium depth peels.

When the TCA solution is applied, patients may feel a burning sensation, but this passes within a few minutes. Healing generally takes 7-10 days following treatment. While patients do not feel any pain, the skin will resemble having a serious sunburn. Often, patients will need more than one treatment to attain the results they are seeking. Patients who receive a TCA skin peel should avoid exposure to the sun for several weeks after being treated. A sunscreen of at least SPF 30 is recommended if the patient must be outdoors.

If you are looking to improve your skin’s appearance, ask us if our TCA skin peel is right for you.

FRAXEL® LASER

As the only office listed in Bakersfield with this advanced system, we are proud to offer the latest Fraxel® Laser technology! The non-invasive Fraxel® Laser procedure can help smooth wrinkles, eliminate age/brown spots and acne scars and enhance texture, tone and pore size.

The non-ablative treatment focuses on the old epidermal pigment cells and does not damage the surrounding living tissue. Common side effects may include swelling and redness, which will subside in a few days. Most patients need 3-5 treatments to reach their desired results; however, your doctor can determine the best treatment plan for your individual case. Following treatment, it is important to limit direct sun exposure while your skin is healing. We recommend wearing sunscreen of SPF 30 if you need to be outside.

V-BEAM VASCULAR LASER

Our office has recently upgraded to Candela’s latest V-beam Perfecta Laser! This V-Beam Laser uses cutting-edge technology to treat a variety of problems.

The laser can clear up redness, birthmarks, vascular lesions, spotting and brown spots on the face, neck, torso and legs. In addition, it can make stretch marks, scars, wrinkles and unsightly veins far less noticeable. The V-beam Laser can also remove warts, acne and other growths and has been known to lessen symptoms of rosacea and psoriasis.

The laser works by using gentle light to treat blood vessels in problem locations. Unlike surgical incision, this dye laser does not harm the skin around the treated area but focuses directly on the problem. This creates a more comfortable and effective treatment that requires a shorter healing time. Generally, several treatments performed over a period of months will create the most effective and long-lasting results. Most patients report little to no pain during treatment, and the results of the treatment begin immediately. Any minor swelling or bruising that may occur should diminish within a few days. For about a week before treatment, patients should avoid medications like aspirin or ibuprofen. This will help lessen such side effects.

V-BEAM PHOTOFACIALS

Many variables can cause your skin to change, whether it’s time or simply the environment. Signs of aging may become prevalent earlier in life due to stress, overexposure to the sun and other factors.

Candela’s latest V-beam Perfecta Laser that we use for photofacials can help reduce the effects aging has on your skin as well as promote a healthier overall look.

The V-Beam Laser works by using gentle light to treat blood vessels in problem locations. This creates a more comfortable and effective treatment that requires a shorter healing time and leaving your skin fresh and rejuvenated. After a series of treatments every few weeks, we recommend follow-up treatments as well as continuing a proper skin care regimen to ensure that your skin stays healthy and younger-looking for a long time.

GENTLELASE

The Candela GentleLase Laser is a quick, efficient and comfortable way to treat a variety of skin problems. The laser can remove unsightly hair faster and more easily than more traditional methods.

It can diminish the appearance of leg and facial veins and reduce or remove freckles, birthmarks, skin defects, and scarring. In addition, the Candela GentleLase Laser can remove wrinkles, leaving your face youthful.

The laser’s beam can pass harmlessly through the skin to the hair follicles, eradicating them. Patients will have the problem area tested prior to treatment, but in some cases, the treatment can even be performed on the same day as the test. Generally, patients report little to no discomfort, but topical anesthetics are provided at patient request. In most cases, the treatment will last from a few minutes to an hour. After treatment, patients may notice minor redness, but it should go away after a few days. Patients should avoid the sun for about a month before and after treatment, and they should also refrain from waxing or plucking. While skin tone and hair color and texture can alter how effective the initial treatments are, most patients find permanent and satisfactory results in about three treatments.
